From an Italian Garden
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (April, 1992)
Authors: Judith Barrett and Claudia Karabaic Sargent
Average review score:

A Great Guide to the Basics
I was introduced to this book on a group ski trip. Coming in from a long day on the slopes, the house was full of the smell of roasting vegetables, baking bread and, yes, garlic. Heaven. I spent a good bit of time that weekend just reading Ms. Barrett's book. Unlike Krikus, I found the book to be easy and entertaining reading. You can learn a lot about a people and their culture by spending a little time in their kitchens. "From an Italian Garden" allowed me that opportunity. The food is simple and appealing and the recipes are well-described and easy to follow. The cooks that weekend sent my wife and I a copy of the book as a gift several weeks later and it remains a treasure of our kitchen library.

Iuz the Evil (Greyhawk Adventures)
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (April, 1993)
Authors: Carl Sargent and Jeff Easley
Average review score:

Everything you need to know about Iuz
This book is set at the time of the From the Ashes boxed set. It has connections to the Marklands Greyhawk Sourcebook, but this is not required.

If you get a chance to buy this book, jump on it. This is the best Greyhawk sourcebook I have seen. Iuz the Evil details the holdings of Iuz, the evil demigod of the flanaess, just after the signing of The Pact of Greyhawk where the Greyhawk Wars ended. The sourcebook begins giving an excellent history of Iuz, from his birth to the end of the Greyhawk Wars. It explains Iuz's fears and aspirations for the future. Iuz's priesthood is examined and new spells and magic items are added for his faithful. All of Iuz's lands are detailed including the howling hills, Dorakaa (the city of skulls)and the rest of the Land of Iuz as well as the occupied territories (Horned Society, Shield Lands, Bandit Kingdoms, and the Land of Tenh). Included are the stats for Iuz's Armies and all the key players good and evil (mostly evil) including the dreaded members of the Boneheart. The sourcebook also gives adventure ideas for low levels all the way to the highest of levels. Another note of interest is that the areas described are the location for several previous adventures including The City of Skulls, White Plume Mountain, The Return to White Plume Mountain, and several others.

John Singer Sargent's El Jaleo
Published in Paperback by Natl Gallery of Art (March, 1992)
Author: Mary Crawford Volk
Average review score:

'The best painting Sargent ever painted...'
An excellent history and detailed analysis of the classic painting by John Singer Sargent. Although known mostly as a nineteenth century portaitist, Sargent's depiction of a Spanish dancer in El Jaleo received much critical acclaim. The book traces Sargent's artisitic influences and fascination with Spanish culture which inspired him to paint El Jaleo. There is also a great section featuring many of Sargent's early sketches and design studies. This book is a great reference for anyone interested in Sargent or this masterpiece of his early works.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits of the 1890s (Complete Paintings: Volume II)
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (01 November, 2002)
Authors: Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray
Average review score:

Absolutely fabulous
The best Sargent book yet. Volume I was good but volume II is even better. This volume covers the 1890's when the artist really got into his stride as a portrait painter and the paintings are magnificent.

The book is well set out with at least one illustration to a page often with portrait sketchs and background information if available. The quality of the reproductions is very good (as in volume I) and the information clear and well structured.

A must buy for Sargent fans (even if like me you thought you didn't need volume II because you already had volume I). The authors have done a great job.
